In a thrilling encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans beat the Mumbai Indians by 55 runs in Match 35 of the TATA IPL 2023 tournament.
After losing the toss and batting first, the Gujarat Titans amassed an impressive total of 207/6 thanks to a fine half-century from Shubman Gill (56 off 34) and scorching innings from Abhinav Manohar (42 off 21) and David Miller (46 off 22).
Rashid Khan (2/27) and Noor Ahmad (3/37), two of the Titans’ star spinners, then shined with the ball to bundle out the Mumbai Indians for 152/9 in their pursuit of 208.
The toss was won by Rohit Sharma, the captain of MI, who elected to bowl first. MI got off to a brilliant start as Arjun Tendulkar, the young pacer, had Wriddhiman Saha caught behind in the third over. The MI pacers kept things tight to give away just three fours in the first five overs.
In the final over of the Powerplay, Shubman Gill gave the team the much-needed boost by hitting two fours and a six off Cameron Green, bringing GT to 50/1 at the end of the Powerplay.
In the seventh over, Rohit Sharma brought in the effective Piyush Chawla, and he struck right away, getting Hardik Pandya caught at long off. After three economical overs from MI, Gill, and Vijay Shankar increased the pressure by hitting two fours and a six off Kartikeya in the tenth over.
As GT took 16 off the over and reached 84/2 at the halfway point, Gill reached his fifty off 30 balls. When Gill mistimed his loft and it fell directly into the grab of Suryakumar Yadav at long-on, Kartikeya recovered in his subsequent over. Chawla caught Vijay Shankar at long-on when he, too, mistimed his loft, giving MI two wickets in two overs.
Miller and Manohar then brought up their 30-ball, 50-run standoff. Miller completed the over with another maximum to bring the over’s total up to 22. In the following over, Manohar attacked Green and smashed a couple of hard sixes. As Manohar was caught at long off on a full toss, Meredith ultimately ended the partnership.
The momentum was however maintained by Tewatia and Miller, who smashed three sixes in the over, including the missed catch of Miller by Behrendorff. Tewatia struck two more sixes in Meredith’s final over, but Miller left the pitch for 46(22) while attempting to hit one himself as GT scored 206/7.
