The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the appointment of former West Indies fast bowler Ottis Gibson as their assistant coach.

This strategic addition comes as KKR prepares to defend their title, having won the championship in the previous season under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, who has since moved to the Punjab Kings.

Who is Ottis Gibson?

Ottis Gibson, a 55-year-old Barbadian, brings a wealth of coaching experience to KKR. He has had a distinguished career as a player, representing the West Indies in both Tests and ODIs from 1995 to 1999.

Post-retirement, Gibson transitioned into coaching, where he has made a significant impact. He served as the bowling coach for the England national team in two separate stints (2007-2010 and 2015-2017) and was the head coach of the West Indies from 2010 to 2014, leading them to their first ICC World T20 title in 2012.

Gibson also held the position of head coach for South Africa from 2017 to 2019 and has worked with Bangladesh and several T20 franchises, including Yorkshire.

Ottis Gibson’s Role at KKR

Gibson replaces Ryan ten Doeschate, who left KKR after IPL 2024 to join Gautam Gambhir’s staff with the India national men’s team.

Gibson will work alongside a strong support staff that includes head coach Chandrakant Pandit, bowling coach Bharat Arun, spin-bowling coach Carl Crowe, and mentor Dwayne Bravo.

Impact on KKR

The appointment of Ottis Gibson is expected to bolster KKR’s coaching setup, bringing in fresh perspectives and strategies.

His experience in handling international teams and his success in T20 formats will be invaluable as KKR seeks to retain their title.

Gibson’s ability to mentor bowlers and his tactical acumen will be crucial in helping KKR navigate the competitive IPL landscape.

KKR’s New Leadership

KKR will begin their title defense under new captain Ajinkya Rahane, with Venkatesh Iyer serving as his deputy.

The team’s first match is scheduled against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22 at Eden Gardens.
