Shreyas Iyer has been officially appointed as the captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the upcoming IPL 2025 season, marking a significant milestone in his career. 

This announcement was made on January 12, 2025, and Iyer becomes the 17th captain in the franchise’s history. 

He is also the first Indian cricketer to lead three different IPL teams, having previously captained the Delhi Capitals and the Kolkata Knight Riders.

  • Captaincy Announcement: The announcement was made during a special segment on a popular reality show, featuring Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, which added a unique touch to the occasion.
  • Auction Success: Iyer was signed for a staggering INR 26.75 crore, making him the second most expensive player in IPL auction history. His acquisition reflects PBKS’s ambition to secure their first-ever IPL title.
  • Previous Achievements: Shreyas Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the 2024 IPL, showcasing his leadership skills and tactical acumen. His successful stint also includes leading Mumbai to triumph in various domestic competitions, including the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Shreyas Iyer’s Vision for PBKS in IPL 

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Iyer stated, “I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title.” 

His partnership with head coach Ricky Ponting, with whom he has previously worked at Delhi Capitals, is expected to strengthen the team’s performance.

Punjab Kings’ Aspirations

The Punjab Kings have had a mixed history in the IPL, with their best performance being runners-up in 2014. 

The franchise is keen on changing its fortunes under Iyer’s leadership. PBKS CEO Satish Menon emphasized that Iyer was their top choice for captaincy, highlighting confidence in his ability to lead effectively.
