KL Rahul’s departure from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has become a significant talking point as the Indian Premier League (IPL) gears up for its 2025 mega auction.
The former captain, who led LSG since its inception in 2022, has opened up about his exit, responding to comments made by LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka regarding the team’s direction and player retention strategy.
Under Rahul’s leadership, LSG had a promising start, qualifying for the playoffs in their first two seasons. However, the 2024 season was disappointing, with the team finishing in the lower half of the points table and failing to reach the playoffs for the first time.
This downturn prompted LSG to reassess its squad ahead of the upcoming season. In a strategic shift, Goenka stated that the franchise aimed to retain players who prioritize team success over personal ambitions.
Rahul’s Response to Goenka
In a recent interview, KL Rahul addressed Goenka’s comments and clarified his reasons for leaving LSG.
He emphasized that his decision was made prior to the retention announcements and stemmed from a desire for a fresh start.
“I wanted to explore my options and play somewhere I can find some freedom,” he stated.
Rahul expressed his need for a lighter team atmosphere, acknowledging that the pressure in the IPL is already immense.
He cited teams like Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings as examples of franchises that maintain a balanced environment regardless of match outcomes.
The Importance of Team Atmosphere
Rahul elaborated on his vision for an ideal team environment, highlighting that a calm and supportive atmosphere is crucial for optimal performance.
He noted that this kind of environment allows players to thrive without being weighed down by excessive pressure. “You see teams like Gujarat Titans and CSK… whether they win or lose, they seem very balanced; they stay very calm,” he remarked.
This perspective underscores his belief that mental well-being is vital in high-stakes competitions like the IPL.
Reflections on His Tenure with LSG
Reflecting on his three-year stint with LSG, Rahul acknowledged the efforts made by himself and the coaching staff to foster a positive team culture. Despite these attempts, he felt it was time to move on for personal growth and career aspirations.
“We tried it first at LSG with Andy Flower and GG [Gautam Gambhir]; last year we had Justin Langer… I think it was a brilliant atmosphere in the dressing room, but somehow you need to move away and find something good for yourself,” he explained.
As KL Rahul prepares to enter the IPL 2025 auction, he is focused on regaining his form and seeking opportunities that align with his aspirations as a player.
He expressed a clear intent to return to the Indian T20I team, stating that this upcoming season would serve as an essential platform for him to showcase his skills and enjoy cricket once again.
