Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced the signing of Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman as a replacement for AM Ghazanfar, who has been ruled out of the IPL 2025 season due to a serious back injury.
Ghazanfar sustained a fracture in the L4 vertebra during Afghanistan’s recent tour of Zimbabwe, which will keep him sidelined for at least four months, affecting his participation in both the IPL and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s Profile
Mujeeb Ur Rahman, a right-arm off-spinner, is known for his mystery spin and has made a significant impact in T20 cricket.
The 23-year-old has played over 300 T20 matches, claiming nearly 330 wickets at an impressive economy rate of around 6.5.
He previously made his IPL debut at just 17 years old and has played 19 IPL matches, taking 19 wickets.
MI secured Mujeeb for INR 2 crore (approximately USD 230,764), making him a valuable addition to their squad as they aim to strengthen their spin attack ahead of the tournament.
His experience and ability to bowl in various phases of the game will be crucial for MI’s strategy in IPL 2025.
Ghazanfar’s Injury Impact
Ghazanfar was initially signed by MI for INR 4.8 crore during the mega auction, marking his first appearance in the IPL after being part of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ camp previously.
His absence is a significant blow for MI, as he was expected to contribute to their bowling lineup. The franchise has expressed its best wishes for Ghazanfar’s speedy recovery.
Upcoming IPL Schedule
The IPL 2025 season is set to begin on March 22, 2025, with MI facing CSK in their opening match. With Mujeeb now on board, MI aims to leverage his skills to enhance their chances of clinching another title.
Mumbai Indians have welcomed Mujeeb into their squad with enthusiasm, and fans are eager to see how he performs in the upcoming season.
