The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is strategically targeting unsold players from the recent IPL 2025 mega auction as it prepares for its upcoming season.

With both leagues likely to overlap in scheduling for the first time, PSL franchises are keen to bolster their rosters by capitalizing on high-profile players who went unsold during the IPL auction.

IPL 2025 Unsold Players Eyeing PSL

Franchise owners have compiled a list of notable overseas players who did not secure contracts in the IPL, including:

  • David Warner
  • Kane Williamson
  • Steve Smith
  • Jonny Bairstow
  • Adil Rashid
  • Daryl Mitchell
  • Alex Carey
  • Shai Hope
  • Keshav Maharaj
  • Akeal Hossain

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been urged to engage with these players’ agents and national boards to confirm their availability for the PSL 2025 season.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach by PSL franchises to enhance their competitive edge by attracting talent that may otherwise choose the more lucrative IPL.

Overlapping Seasons of IPL & PSL

The potential overlap of the PSL and IPL seasons presents unique challenges and opportunities.

Traditionally, many foreign players have opted for the IPL due to its financial incentives, often leaving PSL teams scrambling for talent.

However, with several high-profile players unsold this year, PSL franchises see an opportunity to secure experienced international cricketers who can significantly elevate the league’s profile and competitiveness.

An insider commented, “The team owners want the PCB to talk to the agents and boards of these players and confirm their availability for the PSL 2025.”

This move is crucial as it aims to prevent scenarios where players leave the PSL mid-tournament for IPL commitments, which has previously disrupted the league’s integrity and excitement.

PSL Draft Venue and Global Exposure

In a bid to enhance the brand image of the PSL, franchise owners have proposed hosting the player draft in either London or Dubai.

This decision is inspired by the BCCI’s recent decision to conduct the IPL auction abroad, which garnered significant international attention. Holding the draft in a global city could improve visibility for the PSL and attract more foreign players.

The PCB is reportedly considering this proposal seriously, recognizing that a well-executed draft could elevate the league’s status on the world stage.

Discussions regarding this initiative took place during a recent meeting between PCB officials and franchise owners, focusing on preparations for the upcoming season.
