Mumbai Indians will open their IPL 2022 campaign against Delhi Capitals on 27th March at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The biggest question out of all is which player will open alongside MI skipper Rohit Sharma. And, now, the captain himself has revealed the name of the player ahead of the opening game.
Mumbai Indians are one of the most successful franchises in the history of the tournament. They are the first side to have won IPL four times i-e- 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019. Interestingly, Rohit Sharma led MI to all four titles. The Indian opener is known as one of the most destructive openers of the league. He has mustered 5611 runs in 213 IPL games. Last season, he opened the innings for Mumbai Indians alongside Quinton de Kock. But, the latter has now gone to another franchise leaving a big gap in the side.
Rohit Sharma reveals the name of the batsman
However, Rohit Sharma has now raised down the curtains from one of the most rumored questions. In a recent interaction, the right-handed batsman revealed that he is going to open the innings alongside Ishan Kishan. The southpaw was roped in by Mumbai Indians at a whopping fee of INR 15 Crores making him one of the costliest players sold in the history of IPL auction
“I will open the batting. I have been doing that in the past so I’m looking forward to opening with Ishan Kishan,” said Rohit during a virtual press conference.
Recently, MI coach Mahela Jayawardene opined that Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma have played against different oppositions in the past. As per him, having both the players in the top order provides MI much-needed strength to the team’s batting order.
“I think Rohit and Ishan is a good combination up top and Ishan is also a wicketkeeper, and there are very few who can bat in the top three.”
Talking about the challenge, the MI coach asserted that the main challenge will be to make players play as per their needs. He added that every player will have a role to play in different situations in order to lead MI to a successful campaign.
“They have played for different franchises and countries, where they had different roles. For us, that will be a challenge and we are working with these guys. We are trying to give them a role clarity as to what we are expecting from them and what sort of role they need to play here,” he further stated.
