Virat Kohli's Captaincy in IPL 2025

Speculation surrounding Virat Kohli’s potential return as captain of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for IPL 2025 has intensified, especially following the departure of Faf du Plessis.

However, RCB’s head coach, Andy Flower, has clarified that no decision regarding the captaincy has been made yet, emphasizing that the team is entering a “new era.”

Who will be the Next RCB Captain in IPL 2025?

  • Clarification from Andy Flower: In a recent statement, Flower addressed the ongoing rumors about Kohli’s captaincy, stating, “Well, you’re going to have to wait for the outcome. It’s a new era that we are going into, the start of a three-year cycle.” He stressed that discussions about the captaincy have not yet taken place, indicating that fans and media will need to be patient for any announcements.
  • Kohli’s Leadership History: Virat Kohli has a long-standing association with RCB as captain, having led the team since 2013 and taking them to the finals in 2016. Although he stepped down from the role in 2021, he has stepped in as captain during crucial moments, such as when du Plessis was injured in 2023. His leadership experience and influence in the dressing room remain significant assets for the franchise.
  • Recent Performance: Kohli’s form in the IPL has been impressive; he was the highest run-scorer in the 2024 season with 741 runs in just 15 matches. His performance on the field continues to solidify his importance to RCB, despite some recent struggles in international cricket.

RCB’s New Direction

With Faf du Plessis no longer part of the squad, RCB is actively seeking a new leader.

The franchise has made strategic acquisitions during the recent mega-auction, bringing in players like Phil Salt, Krunal Pandya, Liam Livingstone, Tim David, and Josh Hazlewood.

These additions are aimed at bolstering their chances of finally clinching their first IPL title.
