The apex body of Indian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sacked former Indian spinner Ramesh Powar as the head coach of the Indian women’s team and has sent him to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore under the supervision of the India A and India U-19 head coach, V.V.S. Laxman.

This is the second time Powar has been removed from the apex position. Earlier in 2018, Ramesh Powar was removed from the head coach’s position after a fall-out with the then captain, Mithali Raj. The talismanic Indian batter was then dropped from India’s World Cup side in their semi-final against England. India eventually went on to lose that particular match in West Indies.

Former Indian batter Hrishikesh Kanitkar has been appointed as the batting coach of the Indian women’s team. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Team India will be without a head coach for the upcoming 5-match T20I series against Australia and the ICC T20I Women’s World Cup 2022.

Ramesh Powar was appointed as the head coach in 2021

Notably, Kanitkar had applied for the post of head coach in 2021. But, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of former Indian cricketers Madan Lal and Sulakshana Nail appointed Ramesh Powar as the head coach.

Even though, the BCCI has said that this move of Ramesh Powar is a part of a developing and restructuring module, there are reports that are emerging that Harmanpreet Kaur was unhappy with Ramesh Powar’s coaching style and philosophy. She thus spoke to the national team selectors and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah for the removal of the former Indian spinner.

The 5-match T20I series between India and Australia will begin from 9th December, 2022. The first match will be played at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. It is slated to kick-start from 7:00 PM (IST). It will be Hrishikesh Kanitkar’s first assignment as the batting coach of Team India.
