Explained: What is “Impact Player Rule” In IPL 2023?

Date:

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to enter into its 16th edition with the IPL 2023 auction scheduled to take place on December 23 in Kochi. The players have registered for the auction and IPL 2023 is supposed to be a power-packed tournament.

The “Impact Player Rule” was recently used in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 and after its successful implementation, IPL 2023 will see the Impact Player Rule. This rule will most certainly impact the proceedings of the game as a substitute player will be introduced in the middle of the game.

This would definitely add more flavour to IPL 2023 and will change the landscape of the world’s most popular T20 domestic tournament.

“From IPL 2023 season, a tactical concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to the IPL, wherein one substitute player per team will be able to take a more active role in an IPL match,” the apex body of Indian cricket, BCCI said on Friday.

In this article, we describe the impact player rules for IPL 2023:

Impact Player Rules in IPL 2023

  • Teams will have to name 4 substitutes before the first ball is bowled
  • The teams can bring on a substitute before the end of the 14th over and the substitute which is the “impact player” can bat and bowl exactly like any other member of the playing XI
  • The impact player cannot be brought in during the middle of an over unless a wicket has fallen
