As the game neared its conclusion, Germany had come back to lead Belgium 3-2, but the hosts tied the score in the 58th minute to force a shootout and force the Hockey World Cup 2023 championship match.
Only Pakistan, Germany, and Australia have won back-to-back Hockey World Cup championships. In 1971 and 1973, Pakistan triumphed, followed by Germany in 2002 and 2006, and Australia in 2010 and 2014.
There were some individual awards up for grabs at the end of the campaign, despite the fact that all teams had their sights set on the World Cup trophy, the ultimate reward.
