Rohit Sharma had a great T20I series against West Indies as a captain. He clean-sweep visitors in the three-match series. The series against West Indies marks the commencement of Rohit Sharma’s era as skipper of Team India across all the formats. However, Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has raised questions about his availability and fitness.
India is set for a hectic cricket schedule with players to be involved in the Indian Premier League season as well. It is not going to be difficult for the young players to manage their workload playing across all the formats for the national side. But, it will be a huge task for an established player Rohit Sharma to keep himself fit, who is moving in his early 30’s.
Dinesh Karthik pin-points Rohit Sharma’s age-factor
Dinesh Karthik pin-points Rohit Sharma’s age and fitness subsequently in a recent interview. e said that Rohit Sharma is one of the best players currently playing in international cricket. As per him, the newly appointed skipper did a great job against West Indies. But, he still feels that Rohit Sharma might fail to maintain his fitness with the age factor, not on his side.
“I think Rohit is very astute tactically. And the amount of cricket he will play will define how consistently he can play all three formats. He is at a place where there is a lot of cricket to be played throughout the year. That’s going to be a big challenge for someone like Rohit. He is a quality captain… there’s no doubt about that. When it comes to tactics, we saw in this game (third T20I against West Indies) that he is well ahead of the game,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.
“He rotated bowlers and brought Avesh Khan at the right time. Also, Shardul gave away 18 runs in his first over but finished with figures of 4/33. He (Rohit) is somebody who understands bowlers and what to do with them. With Rohit, the question is always going to be: ‘How much cricket is he going to play?’,” he further added.
