Indian Wicket-Keeper credits ‘bench strength’ for India’s rise to No.1

Date:

India had a great T20I series against West Indies and got a few positives out of the same. They got the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi and Suryakumar Yadav, who performed exceedingly well in the white-ball series against West Indies. And, Dinesh Karthik feels that India has got a strong bench strength due to which they have managed to rise in the shorter format of the game.

India did clean-sweep West Indies in the three-match T20I series and gained top position in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I rankings. Now, the Men in Blue will have to whitewash Sri Lankans in order to maintain their position in the ranking. England have the opportunity in their hand to grab the top spot, who is just 10 points behind Team India.

Dinesh Karthik says India have a strong bench strength

In a recent interview, Dinesh Karthik said that the rise of Team India in the shorter format is due to their talented and strong bench strength. As per him if Men in Blue can outclass West Indies in the absence of their star players then this shows how good they are when it comes to the shorter format.

“Who doesn’t want to be world No.1 even if it is for some period of time?. Because other teams will play matches and then India plays more matches post the IPL so that could change. But for the moment, knowing that Team India is the No.1 T20 team in the world is I think a very, very good feeling.” Karthik said in the latest episode of The ICC Review

“I think it is the quality of players. When you talk about good teams over a period of time, they always talk about the fact that bench strength needs to be very important, and India has great bench strength,” Karthik said

“If you take this series, they have rested Virat Kohli, they have rested Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah. But in spite of that, they have produced an astounding 3-0 series victory against West Indies, which is a very good T20 side,” he added.

“The guys coming in new have really grabbed on to their places. Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer. It’s just good to watch Harshal Patel – he has been an absolute revelation. So I think, the guys coming in are grabbing their opportunities with both hands and that’s always a good sign,” Karthik concluded.
