IPL 2023: The Indian Premier League has garnered enthusiastic viewership from across the globe. With 15 seasons of the IPL successfully concluded, the BCCI is looking to expand. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated earlier about the intentions to expand the Indian Premier League by increasing the number of matches.
Taking into consideration the dearth of major international cricket between 2023–2027 within the IPL season, the number of matches in IPL has now been increased.
Before the e-auction for the new media rights of the Indian Premier League itself, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hinted about increasing the number of matches in the league with each passing season from 2023-2027.
The 2022 edition of the IPL witnessed 74 matches. This will be the case for IPL 2023 and 2024 editions as well. There will be a progressive increase in the number of matches after every two editions. Thereby, there will be 84 games played in the following two seasons – 2025 and 2026 and 94 matches in IPL 2027.
Hitherto, the league was divided into two virtual groups of five teams each. Each team played four teams twice in its own group. Then, they would play four teams once in the opposing group, and twice against the last team. The number increases to 74 when postseason games are included.
In the case of 84, the method may entail playing twice against each side from one’s own group, twice against each side from the other group, and once against the last three.
It would be interesting to see how the BCCI splits up the number of games that each side plays so that the required totals of 84 and 94 are calculated accurately. Before the four play-offs, each team will likely play twice, once at home and once away, in the 94-game scenario.
