Deepak Punia secured a bronze medal in the U23 Asian wrestling championships 2022 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Meanwhile, Sunil Kumar dominated in the Greco-Roman 87kg category and brought the Gold home.
The Haryana born lost against Azizbek Fayzullaev of Uzbekistan 3-7 and Nurtilek Karypbaev of Kyrgyzstan 2-3 in the first two rounds on Sunday. However, the 23-year-old managed to subdue Maksat Satybaldy 9-8 in the 86kg freestyle weight category to settle for a Bronze.
It was a disappointing outcome for Deepak Punia as already being a silver medalist at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships, four-time senior Asian medal winner and a 2018 Junior World Champion.
Last month, Deepak Punia was named to join the Indian wrestling team for the Commonwealth Games 2022, scheduled for July-August this year. The CWA Games will also include the Tokyo 2020 star grapplers like Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya.
India won a total of 25 medals in the U23 competition in the Kyrgyz capital, consisting of 10 gold medals. Eight from freestyle, seven from Greco-Roman, and ten from the female events.
In the men’s freestyle event, the gold medal winners are Aman (57kg), Sujeet (65kg), Naveen (74kg) and Viky (92kg), and the bronze medalist Gourav Baliyan.
In the Greco-Roman event, Sunil Kumar bagged a gold medal in the 87kg and Neeraj in the 63kg category. Indian flat hand wrestlers also bagged one silver and four bronze medals in the event as the eight-day continental tournament concluded on Sunday.
