Du Plessis defeated Adesanya

Dricus du Plessis successfully defended his UFC Middleweight Championship title by submitting Israel Adesanya in a thrilling main event at UFC 305, held on August 18, 2024, at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. This victory marks du Plessis’s first title defense since claiming the championship earlier this year.

The fight began with both fighters showcasing their striking skills, with du Plessis employing a strategy that combined powerful leg kicks and aggressive forward movement. Adesanya, known for his striking prowess, countered effectively from range, making it a competitive bout right from the start.

In the second round, du Plessis shifted gears by utilizing his wrestling skills, securing an early takedown and attempting several submissions, which allowed him to gain momentum.

Adesanya, however, responded in the third round with a series of body shots that seemed to wear down the South African champion. Despite this, du Plessis maintained his composure and continued to find openings for his strikes.

As the fight progressed into the championship rounds, Adesanya appeared to regain control, but du Plessis’s relentless pressure paid off in the fourth round.

After landing a combination of strikes, he executed a takedown that transitioned seamlessly into a rear-naked choke. Adesanya was forced to tap out at 3:38 of the fourth round, marking the first submission loss of his career.

Post-fight, du Plessis expressed his respect for Adesanya, acknowledging his status as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history. “I came here to die for this belt, and luckily, I didn’t have to do either,” he stated, celebrating his victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 14,150 fans.

This historic matchup was notable not only for the championship stakes but also as the first UFC title fight between two African-born fighters.

Du Plessis’s victory further solidifies his position in the middleweight division, and speculation is already swirling about his next opponent, with former champion Sean Strickland being a likely contender for a rematch.

As du Plessis continues his reign as champion, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he builds on this significant victory and what challenges lie ahead in his title defense journey.
