The recent events at the Paris Olympics 2024 have sparked discussions about the medal rankings of India and Pakistan.
As of now, India has secured one silver and five bronze medals, while Pakistan has won a single gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event.
Despite having more total medals, India has been placed below Pakistan in the overall rankings due to the Olympic ranking system prioritizing gold medals.
Olympic Ranking System Explained
The Olympic ranking system primarily focuses on the number of gold medals won by each country. If two nations have the same number of gold medals, the ranking is determined by the number of silver medals. The count of bronze medals is only considered if countries are tied in both gold and silver.
For example, China currently leads the medal tally with 32 gold medals, despite the United States having more total medals (108). The US is ranked second because they have fewer gold medals than China.
In case two countries have an identical number of gold, silver, and bronze medals, they are given the same ranking. This is the case with France and Great Britain, who are currently tied in fourth place, each with 14 gold, 20 silver, and 22 bronze medals.

With Pakistan’s single gold medal, they have surpassed India in the rankings and are currently placed 53rd.
India, despite having one silver and five bronze medals, is ranked 64th due to the Olympic ranking system prioritizing gold medals over total medals.
Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw final with a throw of 89.45 meters.
Although Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem beat him, Neeraj Chopra expressed pride in securing a silver medal and acknowledged the exceptional performance of his competitor.
