India is set to make a significant mark at the Paris Paralympics 2024 by sending its largest-ever contingent of 84 athletes. 

This record number surpasses the previous contingent of 54 athletes at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, showcasing the country’s commitment to supporting athletes with disabilities. 

The Paris Paralympics will commence on August 28, 2024, and will run until September 8, 2024. India’s athletes are gearing up to showcase their skills and determination, aiming to inspire future generations of athletes with disabilities.

The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has expressed optimism about the team’s potential, aiming to exceed the 19 medals won in Tokyo.

Paris Paralympics 2024: Key Highlights

Record Contingent: The Indian delegation consists of 84 athletes competing across 12 sports, including athletics, archery, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo. 

This diverse representation highlights the growing talent pool in para-sports in India.

Medal Aspirations: PCI President Devendra Jhajharia, a double gold medallist himself, has set an ambitious target for the team, stating that they aim to secure more than 25 medals at the upcoming games. 

The athletes have been training rigorously, and many are in excellent shape, ready to compete on the world stage.

Notable Athletes: Among the seasoned competitors is Amit Kumar Saroha, who will be participating in his fourth Paralympics in the F51 category for discus throw. 

At the other end of the spectrum, Sheetal Devi, a 17-year-old archer, is the youngest member of the contingent. 

She recently made headlines by winning gold medals in both individual and mixed team events at the 2023 Asian Para Games.

Government Support: The Indian government, along with various sports organizations, has been instrumental in enhancing the training facilities and resources available to para-athletes. 

This support is expected to play a crucial role in their performance at the Paralympics.
