Rodney Mullen’s Skateboarding Career
Rodney Mullen took up skateboarding as a 10-year-old kid and started winning medals from the young age of 14. Even Though he suffered from a condition called pigeon toe, his passion for skateboarding did not stop.
By 1978 he had already become a big name in his Florida neighborhood. Skateboarding legend Bruce Walker made more of him and became his first sponsor. After which Mullen began using Walker Skateboards.
In 1980, Mullen, then 14, entered the Oasis Pro competition. There he defeated the world champion, Steve Rocco. This Tournament was also the first meeting between Mullen and Tony Hawk.
Rodney Mullen would turn professional in 1980 and would go on to win 34 of his first 35 competitions that he participated in.
In the 1980’s he dominated skateboarding competitions and also kept making new tricks at the same time. The flat ground ollie, kickflip, heelflip, impossible, 360-flip, etc. are some of his best tricks.
Around 1990, he started losing interest in professional skateboarding and started focusing on street Skateboarding. In 1991, Rodney Mullen joined Plan B Skateboards. This is where the skateboarder completely transitioned into street skateboarding.
In1997, Rodney Mullen would join the company A-team. His highlight in this team was the video ‘Rodney vs. Daewon’ which was released in the same year.
In 2000, he became a company rider and co-founded Enjoi and Tensor Trucks. But due to problems he left the company within 2 years.
Around 2010, Mullen became the co-owner and a team rider for the Almost Skateboards brand. His role at Almost Skateboard included research and development on new designs and technologies. At the company, he helped in making Impact Support, Double Impact, and Uber Light skateboards. He has been with the company ever since.
