The 33-year-old experienced a hamstring injury during his batting innings in the second T20I held in Hamilton, forcing him to retire hurt. Subsequent medical examinations have confirmed a minor strain in his right hamstring.
This injury comes as a recurrence of troubles for Williamson in the same right leg, in which he suffered a severe blow last year during the opening game of IPL 2023.
At that time, he endured a more serious setback with ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments, necessitating surgical intervention and keeping him off the field for a substantial part of the year.
Although he made a comeback at the ODI World Cup, the Kiwi skipper faced another injury-related setback when he suffered a fractured finger after being struck by a throw in a match against Bangladesh.
New Zealand Cricket is working on establishing a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for Williamson’s recovery and return to cricket.
The ultimate goal is to have the captain fit and ready for selection in the upcoming Test series against South Africa, scheduled to commence next month.
In the absence of Williamson, the responsibility of steering the team forward will fall on the capable shoulders of interim captain Will Young, who will remain with the squad for the final three games of the Pakistan series.
Young had initially joined the squad ahead of the Wednesday fixture in Dunedin.
Originally planned to be rested from the third T20I for fitness management, Williamson’s absence in the playing XI will pave the way for Tim Seifert to step up.
Seifert will take Williamson’s place in the lineup and don the wicketkeeping gloves, taking over from Devon Conway.
Commenting on the situation, coach Gary Stead acknowledged the void left by Williamson’s stability in the batting order.
He sees this unfortunate circumstance as an opportunity for Tim Seifert to showcase his prowess and fill in the big shoes that Kane Williamson has left vacant for the remainder of the series.
