Playing in his 2nd Ranji Trophy game in this season, Prithvi Shaw announced his arrival in grand style as he slammed a ton against Chhattisgarh, while plying his trade for 41-time Ranji Trophy champions, Mumbai.
Prithvi Shaw had staged a comeback into competitive cricket after a 6-month injury gap and had scored 35 runs against Bengal in the 1st week of February 2024. He was dismissed by Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal and his knock was packed with 5 fours and he had a strike-rate of 83.33.
But in the game against Chhattisgarh, Prithvi Shaw smashed a magnificent century and scored 159 runs in 185 deliveries in the 1st innings on 9th February 2024. He stitched a 244-run partnership stand with Bhupen Lalwani and bagged the entire limelight.
Lalwani scored 102 runs in 238 balls and played a good role in this game too as Mumbai put on 310 runs at the end of Day 1. Chhattisgarh bowlers staged a supreme comeback in the morning of Day 2 and skittled Mumbai out for 351 runs.
Ashish Chouhan was the cynosure of all eyes as he took 6 wickets and Ravi Kiran bagged 3 wickets.
Prithvi Shaw also etched his name in the record books as he became the first Indian cricketer to score two centuries on the opening session of Day 1 of a first-class game. His earlier feat came against Assam in Ranji Trophy 2022-23 and he has once again repeated his heroics.
Prithvi Shaw last played competitive cricket in August
It was in August 2023 that the 24-year-old former Indian U-19 World Cup-winning captain was plying his trade for Northamptonshire. He picked up a knee injury and then underwent surgery in London, where he was stationed for 3 months.
Shaw was then cleared by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and hence could represent Mumbai in the prestigious Ranji Trophy.
Prithvi Shaw was touted as the next-big thing in Indian cricket but inconsistent form and a few off-field controversies has sidelined him from the team.
He has played 5 Test for India and has a good average of 42.4. In ODIs, he has played 6 matches and has also represented India in 1 T20I.
