Borussia Dortmund’s legendary attacking midfielder Marco Reus is all set to leave the club after 12 long years. Marco Reus was the heartbeat of Borussia Dortmund and he will be leaving the club after the end of this year’s season in June 2024.
The two parties have decided to mutually end the contract and there will be no renewal of Reus’s contract post this season. Marco Reus was a part of Borussia Dortmund since 2012 and has been a legend who has achieved a lot for the club.
The 34-year-old attacking midfielder has plied his trade for Borussia Dortmund in 424 matches and has netted 168 goals, creating a niche for himself at the German club. Despite receiving multiple offers from other counterparts, Marco Reus showed tremendous amounts of loyalty to Borussia Dortmund and therefore people respect him a lot.
Reus took to social media to announce this massive decision. In a video posted on Borussia Dortmund’s social media handles, Reus dropped this bombshell of an announcement.
“The club and I decided not to extend the contract. I have spent more than half my life at this club. I am proud and happy to have played for so many years here. I am at a loss for words,” said Marco Reus.
“It is important to let you, the fans, know first, and because we still have a big goal. We want to go to Wembley (for the final) and bring the trophy back to Dortmund,” he added.
Notably, Borussia Dortmund have a golden opportunity of reaching the finals of the UEFA Champions League 2023-24. They have a 1-0 lead with a leg to play in the semi-finals versus PSG.
Marco Reus and co. would be hoping to reach the UEFA Champions League finals for the first time since 2013. The last time, Dortmund had won the Champions League, was way back in the year 1997.
They had defeated Juventus in the finals of the Champions League in 1997 and the scoreline read 3-1.
Borussia Dortmund are presently 5th in the Bundesliga 2023-24 points table. They have registered 16 wins in 31 games and would be looking to have a great finish to the season to give a fitting tribute to the club legend, Marco Reus.
