Spain, who recently won the UEFA Euro 2024, defeating England, started their Paris Olympics 2024 campaign on a winning note. They defeated Uzbekistan 2-1 at the Parc des Princes and would be confident of completing a double in this sporting calendar.
Outright favourites at the start of the game, Spain lived up to their expectations and billing and ensured a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan. Spain’s Marc Pubill opened the goal-scoring account in the 29th minute before debutant Uzbekistan, scored the equaliser through a penalty.
It was Uzbekistan’s captain, Eldor Shomurodov, who scored the goal for the debutants in the Olympics. Sergio Gomez then made sure that the happiness was short-lived for the Uzbekistan fans as he scored in the 62nd minute and Spain took the lead.
Notably, Sergio Gomez’s penalty kick was stopped in the 59th minute and Uzbekistan showed steely nerves and resolve against a power-packed Spanish side.
A few minutes later, he made amends and made sure that Spain have a winning start in the Paris Olympics 2024.
Spain next lock horns with Dominican Republic
The next game for Spain in the Paris Olympics 2024 will be a game against Dominican Republic on 27th July 2024. In the other game in Group C, Egypt defeated Dominican Republic and are in the 2nd position.
The top two teams from each group qualify for the quarter finals and a win for Spain on 27th July 2024, will cement their place in the knockout stages of the Paris Olympics 2024.
Spain had last bagged the Gold Medal in the Olympics in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The Spaniards had defeated Poland in the finals and Ghana had finished in the 3rd place and subsequently got the bronze medal.
Uzbekistan have to go back to the drawing board and iron out the chinks in their armour before locking horns with Egypt on 27th July 2024 at 8:30 PM (IST).
