Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made headlines following her recent hint at a potential U-turn from her retirement announcement. 

Just days after her emotional statement on social media, where she expressed feelings of defeat after being disqualified from the 2024 Paris Olympics, Vinesh indicated that she might continue her wrestling career, possibly until 2032.

Vinesh, who was poised to compete in the women’s 50kg freestyle final, faced disqualification due to being 100 grams overweight. This incident occurred just a day after she made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. 

The disqualification was a devastating blow, leading Vinesh to announce her retirement with a poignant message on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024.” She expressed her heartbreak, saying, “Mom won the wrestling match against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream, my courage is all broken.”

Emotional Reflection

In a recent post on August 16, 2024, Vinesh reflected on her journey and hinted at a possible return to the mat. 

She stated, “Maybe under different circumstances, I could see myself playing till 2032, because the fight in me and wrestling in me will always be there.” 

This statement underscores her enduring passion for the sport and her desire to continue competing despite her setbacks.

Vinesh also took the opportunity to express gratitude to her coaching staff, particularly Woller Akos, whom she described as the best coach and guide in women’s wrestling. 

She highlighted his unwavering support and ability to help her regain focus during challenging times. 

Additionally, she acknowledged Ashwini Jeevan Patil, her physiotherapist, for her dedication and commitment throughout Vinesh’s wrestling journey.

Future Aspirations

While Vinesh’s future remains uncertain, her recent comments suggest a rekindled determination to fight for her place in wrestling. 

She indicated that she would continue to advocate for what she believes in, signaling her commitment to the sport and her aspirations for the future.
