Zaheer Khan Joins LSG

Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has officially joined the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their mentor ahead of the IPL 2025.

This announcement of Zaheer Khan was made during a press conference held by LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka in Kolkata on August 28, 2024.

Zaheer’s appointment comes in the wake of Gautam Gambhir’s departure from the franchise, as Gambhir has taken on the role of head coach for Kolkata Knight Riders and is also leading the Indian national team.

Zaheer Khan’s Role and Responsibilities

Zaheer Khan will not only serve as a mentor but is also expected to take on the role of bowling coach, filling the void left by Morne Morkel, who has left LSG to join Gambhir’s coaching staff.

Zaheer’s extensive experience in cricket, particularly in fast bowling, will be invaluable to LSG’s squad, which includes promising bowlers like Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Yash Thakur.

His first major assignment will be during the IPL 2025 auction, where he will help shape the team’s roster.

Zaheer Khan’s Career

Zaheer Khan has represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 17 T20I, accumulating 610 international wickets.

In the IPL, he played for three franchises: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), participating in 100 matches and taking 102 wickets at an economy rate of 7.58. His last appearance in the IPL was in 2017 when he captained the Delhi Daredevils.

Zaheer Khan’s Future Plans for LSG

Beyond his immediate responsibilities, there are plans for Zaheer to be involved in broader initiatives.

The current coaching staff of LSG includes head coach Justin Langer, alongside other notable figures like Adam Voges and Lance Klusener.

“LSG in their short stint has reached playoff 2 out of 3 times. I will be the bowling coach. This will be a special journey. Have played a lot of matches, spent a lot of time in the city. Will reach the city as soon as possible,” Zaheer Khan said.
