LSG Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant is the most expensive player in IPL history, with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) acquiring him for ₹27 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction.

This record-breaking bid, which took place on November 24, 2024, surpassed the previous record held by Shreyas Iyer, who was bought for ₹26.75 crore by Punjab Kings just moments earlier.

Sanjiv Goenka’s Strategy

Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of LSG, revealed that the decision to go all-in for Pant was part of a well-thought-out strategy rather than an impulsive move.

He stated that the franchise had earmarked a budget of between ₹25 crore and ₹27 crore specifically for Pant, indicating that they had anticipated his value in the auction.

Goenka emphasized that their approach was a blend of calculated planning and understanding rival intentions, particularly noting how Delhi Capitals (DC) utilized their Right to Match (RTM) card to retain Pant after LSG’s initial bids.

Goenka described Pant as an integral part of their plans due to his leadership qualities and ability to perform under pressure.

He cited Pant’s innovative thinking during critical moments in matches, such as his tactics during the T20 World Cup against South Africa, where he effectively changed the game’s momentum.

This resilience and strategic mindset were key factors in LSG’s decision to invest heavily in him.

The Bidding War

The auction saw intense competition between LSG and DC, with both franchises pushing their limits to secure Pant. Initially, LSG placed a bid of ₹20.75 crore, but as DC employed their RTM card, LSG had to escalate their offer to clinch the deal at ₹27 crore.

Goenka remarked that while it might seem like an “ego buy,” it was fundamentally about building a strong team around a player of Pant’s caliber.

Implications for LSG

With this acquisition, LSG aims to strengthen its core team and enhance its competitive edge in the IPL.

Goenka expressed confidence that Pant would be a long-term asset for the franchise, potentially contributing for the next decade or more.

The franchise’s strategy also included retaining key players and focusing on building a balanced squad with a mix of youth and experience.
