Meet Suryansh Shedge

Suryansh Shedge, a 21-year-old cricketer from Mumbai, has emerged as a remarkable talent in Indian cricket, particularly after his impressive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024.

His journey from a promising young player to a potential star in the upcoming IPL 2025 season has captured the attention of fans and selectors alike.

Stellar Performances in SMAT

Shedge showcased his exceptional finishing abilities during the SMAT, particularly in high-pressure situations.

In the final against Madhya Pradesh, he played a crucial role by scoring an unbeaten 36 runs off just 15 balls, helping Mumbai secure their title.

Walking in with Mumbai needing 46 runs from 34 balls, Shedge remained calm under pressure, hitting two sixes off Venkatesh Iyer and finishing the match with a flurry of boundaries against Tripuresh Singh.

His performance not only highlighted his skill but also his composure in critical moments.

Earlier in the tournament, Shedge had also contributed significantly with another unbeaten 36 runs in the quarter-final against Andhra, reinforcing his reputation as a reliable finisher.

His ability to perform consistently under pressure has made him one of the standout players of the tournament.

Training and Mindset

Shedge’s success can be attributed to his dedicated training regimen and mental preparation.

He revealed that he adjusted his practice sessions to simulate match conditions more effectively, focusing on scoring within limited deliveries.

“I was playing six-ball sets, trying to score a certain amount of runs in those six balls,” he explained. This approach has helped him develop muscle memory for executing shots without hesitation.

His admiration for players like Hardik Pandya and Ben Stokes, known for their powerful striking, reflects his ambition to emulate their success.

Shedge has also incorporated breathing exercises into his routine to manage pressure and enhance focus during matches.

Overcoming Adversity

Shedge’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. In 2023, he suffered a stress fracture in the L4 region of his spine, which sidelined him during crucial periods, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali season.

The injury led to his release from the Lucknow Super Giants, who had initially planned to retain him. However, with support from coaches and family, Shedge persevered through rehabilitation and returned stronger than ever.

His performances have not gone unnoticed by teammates and coaches.

Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer praised Shedge’s work ethic and commitment to improvement, stating, “He’s someone who puts in hard yards… you could see it in his athletic ability.” This endorsement from established players underscores Shedge’s potential as he prepares for the IPL.
