South African fast bowler, Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a back injury.

The announcement came on January 15, 2025, just weeks before the tournament is set to commence in Pakistan.

    Injury Details

Nortje, who is known for his express pace and ability to generate bounce, underwent scans earlier this week that confirmed the severity of his condition.

The 31-year-old right-arm pacer had been included in South Africa’s squad for the tournament but will now miss both the Champions Trophy and the ongoing SA20 league, where he was set to represent the Pretoria Capitals.

This injury marks another chapter in a series of fitness issues that have plagued Nortje throughout his career.

He last played international cricket during the T20 World Cup 2024, where he was instrumental in helping South Africa reach the final against India.

However, he has not featured in any competitive matches since then, having missed key tournaments including the 2023 World Cup due to a stress fracture in his back.

    Impact on South Africa’s Squad

Nortje’s absence is a considerable blow to the Proteas, as he has been one of their leading bowlers in white-ball cricket, boasting impressive statistics with 36 wickets in 22 ODIs and 53 wickets in 42 T20Is.

His experience and skill would have been vital for South Africa as they aim for success in the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19.

South Africa’s head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over Nortje’s injury but remains optimistic about the squad’s depth and experience.

The team is set to begin their campaign against Afghanistan on February 21 in Karachi.

    Replacement Considerations

As of now, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has not announced a replacement for Nortje. However, fast bowler Gerald Coetzee is considered a strong candidate due to his previous performances and potential.

Coetzee was initially overlooked for Nortje because of the latter’s superior experience but could now step into the role as South Africa looks to bolster its bowling attack.
