India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has expressed strong support for veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, stressing their critical roles in the tournament.

As the team prepares to compete in Dubai starting February 19, Gambhir believes that both players will significantly contribute to India’s success despite recent concerns regarding their form.

    The Importance of Experience

During a recent press conference at the BCCI annual awards, Gambhir highlighted the value that Kohli and Rohit bring to the team, stating, “I think both Rohit and Virat add so much value to the dressing room and Indian cricket. They’ve got to play a massive role in the Champions Trophy.”

Both players have faced scrutiny due to their performances in recent matches, including a disappointing series against New Zealand and Australia. However, Gambhir remains confident in their abilities and hunger to perform for the national team.

Gambhir further noted that Kohli and Rohit possess a unique passion for playing for India, which can be instrumental in high-pressure situations typical of a tournament like the Champions Trophy.

“They are so hungry; they want to play for the country and deliver for the country,” he added.

    Champions Trophy Format Challenges

The Champions Trophy presents a different challenge compared to traditional tournaments like the 50-over World Cup.

With only three league matches before knockout rounds, every game is crucial.

Gambhir stressed that “Champions Trophy is a completely different challenge… every game is a make-or-break.” He emphasized that to win the tournament, India needs to perform consistently across all matches.

The coach also addressed the heightened anticipation surrounding the India-Pakistan match scheduled for February 23.

While acknowledging its significance, he stated, “We don’t go to the Champions Trophy thinking that the 23rd is the most important game for us. All games are important; our mission is to win the Champions Trophy.”

    Leadership Transition

Gambhir praised Suryakumar Yadav, who has taken over as T20I captain following Kohli and Rohit’s retirements from T20 internationals after last year’s World Cup.

He commended Yadav’s leadership style, which emphasizes selflessness and fearlessness—qualities that Gambhir believes are essential for success in T20 cricket.

As India gears up for its opening match against Bangladesh on February 20, all eyes will be on how well Kohli and Rohit perform under pressure.

Their experience could prove vital in guiding younger players through challenging situations throughout the tournament.
