Ricky Ponting Sets New Rules Ahead of IPL 2025 for Punjab Kings

Date:

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season approaches, newly appointed Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach Ricky Ponting has made headlines by establishing a set of new rules aimed at transforming the franchise’s fortunes.

With a history of underperformance, having not qualified for the playoffs since 2014, Ponting’s leadership is seen as a pivotal moment for the team.

Key Changes Implemented by Ponting

Control Over Communication

One of the most significant rules introduced by Ponting is the prohibition of direct communication between team owners and players.

In a recent podcast appearance on The Howie Games, he asserted, “It’s my team now. Owners are very passionate and they want success, but the communication directly to the players will be through me and not them.”

This move is intended to streamline decision-making and create a more cohesive environment within the team.

Emphasis on Team Culture

Ponting aims to foster a strong team culture, which he believes is essential for success in the IPL.

He stated that he has laid out clear expectations for how he wants the team to operate, emphasizing that the owners and management must respect his approach.

“They can ask me questions; that’s okay, but I want to ensure that all communication goes through me,” he added.

This approach seeks to eliminate any potential confusion or mixed messages that could arise from multiple points of contact.

Focus on Core Indian Players

Acknowledging the importance of building a solid foundation, Ponting has highlighted the need to prioritize core Indian players in the squad.

He recently acquired Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in IPL 2024, for ₹26.75 crores and appointed him as captain for the upcoming season. Ponting believes that having strong Indian players will be crucial in turning around PBKS’s fortunes.

Ponting’s Track Record

Ricky Ponting brings a wealth of experience to PBKS, having previously coached Delhi Capitals (DC) and contributed to their best results, including a runner-up finish in 2020.

His successful stint with Mumbai Indians (MI) as part of their coaching staff during their title-winning years in 2013 and 2015 further solidifies his credentials.

Ponting’s approach is characterized by a focus on discipline, strategy, and a commitment to developing young talent.

His previous teams have thrived under his leadership, which raises expectations for PBKS as they look to break free from their historical struggles.
