The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are entering a new era with the appointment of legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting as their head coach.

With a clear vision for building a championship-winning team, Ponting has already identified three core players whom he considers “non-negotiable” for PBKS in the upcoming IPL 2025 season.

Ponting, known for his strategic acumen and ability to identify talent, has emphasized the importance of building a strong Indian foundation for the team.

His selections reflect a desire for experienced leadership, reliable pace bowling, and a quality spin option – all crucial ingredients for success in the IPL.

Here’s a detailed look at the three players Ponting has earmarked as essential for PBKS:

1. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer emerged as Ponting’s top priority, with PBKS ultimately securing his services for a whopping ₹26.75 crore in the auction, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history.

This significant investment underscores Ponting’s belief in Iyer’s leadership qualities and batting prowess.

Ponting has made it clear that he prioritized securing an experienced captain he’d previously worked with and who has tasted significant success.

Iyer fits that bill perfectly, having led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title in 2024. His proven leadership capabilities and tactical awareness will be invaluable for guiding PBKS.

2. Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh, the talented left-arm pacer, has been a consistent performer for PBKS in recent years.

Ponting reaffirmed the franchise’s faith in the young bowler by using their Right to Match (RTM) card to retain him for ₹18 crore, making him the most expensive Indian pacer in IPL auction history.

Arshdeep has become a mainstay of the PBKS bowling attack, consistently delivering crucial wickets with the new ball and at the death. His ability to swing the ball and bowl accurate yorkers makes him a valuable asset in all phases of the game.

3. Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal, one of the most successful leg-spinners in IPL history, was another key target for Ponting.

PBKS secured his services for ₹18 crore, making him the priciest spinner in the tournament.

In the IPL, wrist spinners have had tremendous success, and Chahal’s addition gives the Punjab Kings a great wicket-taking option in the middle overs.

Chahal’s experience and ability to bowl in various phases of the innings make him an invaluable asset.
