ICC Champions Trophy was introduced by ICC in 1988 and was called the “Mini World Cup.” This was initially known as the ICC Knockout Tournament. This was held every four years to generate funds for cricket in non-Test playing nations. It first took place in Kenya and Bangladesh. Frequent tournaments were hosted in England and India after its growing commercial success.

The format was revised in 2009 to include the top 8 teams in the ICC ODI rankings. After the 2017 edition, the Champions trophy was discontinued from the ICC events, ensuring only one global cricket format to be kept per event.

In 2021, ICC announced that the Champions Trophy would return with editions for 2025 in hybrid model in Pakistan UAE form 19 February to 9 March 2025 and 2029 in India.

After the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup League stage, the teams that have qualified for the 2025 Champions Trophy are India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
