In a significant setback for Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, star opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the tournament due to an oblique injury.
The injury occurred during Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand in Karachi, forcing him to leave the field.
The Event Technical Committee has approved Imam-ul-Haq as his replacement in the squad.
Injury Details and Initial Match
Zaman sustained the injury while fielding in the opening over of the match against New Zealand, attempting to stop a shot from Will Young.
Despite the injury, he returned to bat, scoring 24 runs off 41 deliveries before being dismissed.
It was evident throughout his innings that he was struggling with his running and discomfort.
Official Announcement and Fakhar’s Reaction
Fakhar Zaman confirmed his unavailability for the remainder of the Champions Trophy 2025 via a post on X, formerly Twitter.
“Unfortunately, I’m now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner. Grateful for the opportunity. I will be backing our boys in green from home,” he stated, expressing his disappointment but also optimism for a strong comeback.
Imam-ul-Haq Named Replacement
Imam-ul-Haq, aged 29 and having played 72 ODIs, has been approved as Fakhar Zaman’s replacement by the ICC’s Event Technical Committee.
This decision comes after Fakhar was officially ruled out due to the oblique injury.
Imam last played an ODI for Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup against South Africa. He has a decent ODI record, with 3138 runs at an average of 48.27.
Impact on Pakistan’s Squad
Fakhar Zaman’s absence is a major blow for Pakistan, especially considering his past performances in crucial matches.
Most notably, he played a match-winning knock in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against India, scoring 114 runs.
Pakistan is already missing another key player, Saim Ayub, who was ruled out earlier due to an ankle injury.
