The recent losses suffered by Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, particularly against arch-rivals India and New Zealand, have sparked intense criticism from former cricketers and experts.

The team’s early exit from the tournament has not only raised questions about their cricketing depth but also led to concerns about the future of cricket in Pakistan.

    Back-to-Back Losses and Early Exit

Pakistan’s dismal performance began with a 60-run defeat to New Zealand, followed by a six-wicket loss to India in Dubai.

These consecutive losses effectively sealed their group-stage exit, with New Zealand and India advancing to the semi-finals.

The defeat against India was particularly disappointing, as Pakistan managed only 241 runs in 49.4 overs, while India comfortably chased the target in 42.3 overs, thanks to Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century.

    Expert Reactions

Former Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad expressed his disappointment, stating that cricket, once the nation’s pride, has now “finished” in Pakistan.

He criticized the selection process, alleging favoritism and a lack of a proper system for player selection.

Similarly, former captain Shahid Afridi emphasized the need for an attacking approach, suggesting that Pakistan’s mindset is outdated and unable to compete with modern cricket strategies.

Sunil Gavaskar, a legendary Indian cricketer, also weighed in, asserting that even an India B team could defeat Pakistan in their current form.

He highlighted Pakistan’s lack of bench strength and natural talent, which has been a hallmark of their cricketing tradition.

    Financial and Sponsorship Challenges

The early exit from the Champions Trophy has significant financial implications for Pakistan cricket.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to face challenges in attracting sponsors for the men’s national team due to the team’s poor performance in major tournaments.

While the PCB is guaranteed hosting fees and a share of ICC revenues, the brand value of Pakistan cricket has taken a hit, making it difficult to market the team as an attractive brand for future events.

    Coaching Staff Changes

In response to the disappointing performance, the PCB is considering major changes to the support staff, including potentially relieving head coach Aaqib Javed of his duties.

Former players are being considered for coaching roles, indicating a broader overhaul of the team’s management structure.

The recent defeats have highlighted deep-seated issues within Pakistan cricket, from selection processes to coaching strategies.
