Pakistan had a horrendous ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign as they had 2 losses and 1 No-Result (NR). After losses against New Zealand and India and then after Bangladesh’s loss to New Zealand, the semi-final hopes for the defending champions came crashing by.
The Men in Green, who were the defending champions in the tournament have now bene shunted out of the competition. Pakistan’s poor form in ICC events continue as Mohammad Rizwan and co. had to exit the tournament without a single win.
Pakistan’s final nail in the coffin was the abandoned rain versus Bangladesh because of heavy downpour in Rawalpindi on 27th February 2025. It was the 2nd game in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to have been cancelled because of torrential rain.
Pakistan are going through a massive crisis and a lot of cricket pundits and fans of Pakistan are pinning the blame on Mohammad Rizwan.
In this article, we take a look at 3 reasons why Mohammad Rizwan should continue as Pakistan captain post the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025:
1. Excellent record in PSL
Mohammad Rizwan has an exceptional record in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) where his captaincy record is second to none. He leads Multan Sultans in the PSL and has a win percentage of 66.66 in the franchise tournament.
In 48 matches. Rizwan has tasted 32 victories and knows how to win matches from scenarios which are impossible to stage a turnaround. His good captaincy skills in PSL always injects him confidence when he leads the national side.
2. Pakistan need stability
Pakistan have always been a side who pushes players under the bus once favourable outcomes and results don’t come. Be it the sacking of Sarfaraz Ahmed in 2019 or the resignation of Babar Azam as the captain in 2023 and then again in 2024, the leadership unit has never been a settled one.
For once, the Men in Green can repose faith in Rizwan and help him build a solid side for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
3. Lack of options
Pakistan doesn’t have much options for captaincy and the youngsters in the team need a lot of temperament and experience under their belt. The team heavily hinges on Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan and there is a leadership vacuum in the side.
With the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 scheduled to be played in 2 years, Pakistan need to start from the basics and build a strong core for the ICC event.
