    Shubman Gill Lead India

Shubman Gill is expected to make his ODI captaincy debut when India takes on New Zealand in their final group stage match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

This decision comes as regular captain Rohit Sharma is likely to be rested due to a hamstring injury, which he sustained during a match against Pakistan earlier in the tournament.

    Background and Injury Concerns

Rohit Sharma hurt his hamstring while celebrating the wicket of Babar Azam in a match against Pakistan.

Despite the injury not being serious, the team management is cautious about risking their captain’s fitness ahead of crucial matches.

Rohit did not participate in the practice session before the New Zealand match, further indicating that he might be given a break to ensure he is fully fit for the knockout stages.

    Shubman Gill’s Rise to Captaincy

Shubman Gill, who serves as India’s vice-captain, has been in exceptional form in the Champions Trophy 2025.

He scored a match-winning 101 not out against Bangladesh and 46 against Pakistan, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

Gill has previously led India in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, where India won 4-1. He is also the captain of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.

    Impact on Team Dynamics

Gill’s captaincy debut will be a significant moment for Indian cricket, marking a new chapter in his career.

His leadership skills and tactical acumen will be put to the test as he navigates the team through this crucial match.

The match against New Zealand is essentially a dead rubber, as both teams have already qualified for the semifinals. However, it will determine which team finishes as the top seed in Group A.

    Possible Lineup Changes

With Rohit Sharma likely to be rested, there could be changes in the Indian lineup. Washington Sundar and Rishabh Pant are contenders to replace Rohit in the playing XI.

If Pant is selected, he might open the batting alongside Shubman Gill, adding a new dimension to India’s top order.
