The ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 has brimmed with action and entertainment. The 5 teams have been clinical in their matches and with every passing year, the tournament grows in leaps and bounds.
In the WPL 2025, Delhi Capitals women have been ruling the roost and are presently right at the top of the points table. Their openers in the form of Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning have given them explosive starts and the Delhi-based franchise are gunning for their maiden WPL title.
Delhi steamrolled past Royal Challengers Bengaluru women on 1st March 2025 by 9 wickets. Shafali Verma scored 80* runs in 43 deliveries and she deservedly bagged the player of the match award for her buccaneering innings.
Former Indian legendary captain and batter Mithali Raj heaped praise on Verma for batting in a mature fashion and not throwing away her wicket in the powerplay.
“So far, we’ve spoken a lot about the opening partnership for Delhi Capitals, with over 300-run partnerships. But this, I believe, is the first time Shafali Verma has stitched together a 140 run partnership with a number three batter—Jess Jonassen. The way she constructed her innings today was truly special. We’ve often seen her get into the 40s during the powerplay and then throw her wicket away. However, today, she ensured she played into the middle overs, complementing Jess Jonassen at the other end and seeing her team through. This is exactly what we expect from her, and hopefully, she continues to do this for Delhi Capitals in the coming seasons,” Mithali said in a show in JioHotstar.
Mithali Raj further dissected how Shafali Verma planned out her innings and how she didn’t attempt the big shots once Jess Jonassen was striking the ball all across the park. She also mentioned that Verma had the ability to score centuries in T20 cricket.
“When Jess Jonassen joined Shafali, her strike rate was actually ahead of Shafali’s, and she was striking the ball better with the number of boundaries she hit. For a long period, Shafali didn’t attempt a big shot for a maximum. But in the middle overs, once the spinners came in, she started unleashing those massive sixes, one of which went 82 meters. I think she now understands her role. If she values her wicket and bats for 20 overs, she’s already on 80 runs. She has the potential to be one of those batters who, if she plays a little longer in T20 cricket, will have centuries to her name. And that could make a massive impact on the team’s total,” she added.
Shafali Verma is the leading run-scorer of Delhi Capitals in WPL 2025
One of the key reasons why Delhi Capitals women are right at the top of the points table is because of the aggressive batting prowess of the youngster. Verma has amassed 260 runs in 7 games and has a good average of 43.33.
If she can bat in the same way in the remainder of the tournament, she could well be one of the contenders for the leading run-scorer award.
