Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially signed Chetan Sakariya as a replacement for the injured Umran Malik ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

This announcement was made on March 16, 2025, following news that Malik would be sidelined due to an unspecified injury, marking a significant setback for the defending champions.

Background on Umran Malik’s Injury

Umran Malik, known for his exceptional pace and ability to consistently bowl over 150 km/h, has faced a series of injuries that have affected his recent performances.

After a lackluster IPL 2024 season, where he played only one match for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Malik was picked up by KKR for INR 75 lakh in the auction.

However, he has not participated in any competitive matches since then due to health issues, including a bout of dengue and a hip fracture that ultimately ruled him out of the upcoming IPL season.

Malik’s absence leaves KKR without a key fast-bowling option, particularly in light of Anrich Nortje’s own injury concerns. The team will need to adapt quickly to maintain their competitive edge in the tournament.

Chetan Sakariya’s Profile

Chetan Sakariya, the left-arm medium pacer from Saurashtra, has been brought in as Malik’s replacement.

Sakariya has previously played 19 IPL matches across three seasons and has taken 20 wickets at an economy rate of 8.43.

He has also represented India in one ODI and two T20Is, showcasing his potential on both domestic and international stages.

Sakariya’s recent form includes participation in the Ranji Trophy for Saurashtra, where he is working his way back from injury. His signing for KKR comes at a crucial time as he looks to prove himself in the IPL after going unsold in the recent auction.

Changes in KKR’s Leadership

KKR is undergoing significant changes this season, not just with player replacements but also in leadership.

Following the departure of last year’s captain Shreyas Iyer to Punjab Kings, Ajinkya Rahane has been appointed as the new captain with Venkatesh Iyer serving as vice-captain.

Rahane recently led Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was named Player of the Tournament for his outstanding performance.

KKR in IPL 2025

With Chetan Sakariya now part of the squad, KKR will look to leverage his skills alongside other key players as they aim to defend their title.

The team will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22 at Eden Gardens, where they hope to start strong despite the challenges posed by injuries.
