IPL 2025 rule change

The Indian Premier League 2025 is back — but not without a fresh batch of rule tweaks that could change the way the game is played (and watched).

From giving bowlers more help in dewy conditions to rewarding the champs with a little extra advantages, here’s everything you should know about IPL 2025 rule change:

1. Two Balls in an Innings (Second Innings Only)

To fix the long-standing “dew problem” during night games, the IPL is introducing a second new ball in the second innings — one for overs 1–10, and a fresh one from over 11 onwards.

This measure aims to provide bowlers with better control and balance the contest between bat and ball in dew-affected conditions.

2. Lifting of the Saliva Ban

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has lifted the ban on using saliva to shine the ball, a restriction initially imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This change is expected to assist bowlers in achieving conventional and reverse swing, adding a strategic element to the game.

3. Expansion of the Decision Review System (DRS)

The DRS has been expanded to allow players to challenge umpire decisions on off-side and head-high wides. Hawk-Eye technology will assist in these reviews, aiming to enhance the accuracy of umpiring decisions.

4. Continuation of the Impact Player Rule

The Impact Player rule, introduced in previous seasons, will continue in IPL 2025. This rule allows teams to substitute one player during a match, providing strategic flexibility and opportunities for uncapped players.

5. Over-Rate Penalty System Revamp

Captains will no longer face immediate match suspensions for slow over-rate offenses. Instead, a demerit point system has been introduced, with points tracked over three years. This change aims to ensure that captains are not unduly penalized for minor infractions.

6. Introduction of the Golden Badge

In a move inspired by European football leagues, the defending champions will don a Golden Badge on their jerseys. Kolkata Knight Riders, the 2024 champions, will be the first team to feature this badge in IPL 2025, symbolizing their reigning champion status.

These rule changes are set to make IPL 2025 a more dynamic and balanced tournament, addressing past challenges and enhancing the overall quality of the competition.
