    Pakistan Cricket Team Struggles

Pakistan’s recent loss in the T20 series against New Zealand has further exposed the underlying issues plaguing its cricket team.

This defeat, coupled with their poor performance in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, has highlighted critical areas that need urgent attention.

Here are three key reasons why the Pakistan cricket team is currently struggling.

    1. Internal Politics and Leadership Instability

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been criticized for frequent changes in leadership, coaching staff, and selection committees, often driven by political motives rather than merit.

Former cricketers like Rashid Latif and Wasim Akram have pointed out that these constant shifts have created instability within the team setup, affecting player morale and performance.

The lack of a cohesive strategy is evident in the disconnect between captain Mohammad Rizwan and head coach Aaqib Javed, with reports suggesting disagreements over team selections.

Such internal conflicts undermine unity and make it difficult for players to focus on their game. Without a stable management structure, Pakistan risks further decline in international cricket.

    2. Outdated Playing Style

Pakistan’s approach to limited-overs cricket has been criticized as outdated and overly conservative.

Former captain Shahid Afridi remarked that Pakistan is still employing strategies reminiscent of the 1980s and 1990s while other teams have embraced modern, aggressive styles.

This was evident during their matches against New Zealand in both the Champions Trophy and T20 series, where they struggled to score at competitive rates and played an alarming number of dot balls.

The team’s inability to adapt to evolving trends in T20 cricket has left them vulnerable against stronger opponents.

Analysts argue that Pakistan needs to overhaul its playing style and encourage a more fearless mindset among players if they hope to compete effectively on the global stage.

    3. Poor Squad Selection and Lack of Depth

Injuries to key players like Fakhar Zaman have exposed Pakistan’s lack of depth in their squad. The PCB’s selection policies have been widely criticized, with former players labeling them “political selections” rather than merit-based decisions.

For instance, promoting out-of-form Babar Azam to open the batting order during the Champions Trophy backfired, while replacements like Imam-ul-Haq failed to make an impact.

Additionally, Pakistan’s reliance on part-time spinners instead of specialists has weakened their bowling attack.

The absence of a second spinner in crucial matches against New Zealand further highlighted poor planning by selectors.

Without addressing these selection issues and building a stronger bench strength, Pakistan will continue to struggle in high-stakes tournaments.
