KL Rahul is on the verge of making a much-anticipated return to India’s T20 International (T20I) squad after a gap of two and a half years, thanks to his outstanding performances in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.
The selectors are reportedly considering him for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh, scheduled for August 2025, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is.
A Long Wait Since Last T20I Appearance
Rahul last played a T20I for India during the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup semifinal against England at Adelaide Oval, where he was dismissed cheaply for five runs.
His overall performance in that tournament was underwhelming, scoring just 128 runs in six matches at an average of 21.33 and a strike rate of 120.75. This led to his exclusion from the T20I setup as the team sought fresh options.
Strong IPL 2025 Performance
Playing for Delhi Capitals, Rahul has scored 493 runs in 11 matches, with an average of 61.63 and a strike rate of 148.04.
He also became the fastest Indian to reach 8,000 runs in T20 cricket, achieving this milestone in just 224 innings, surpassing Virat Kohli’s previous record of 243 innings.
Selectors Considering T20I Comeback
Rahul last played a T20I for India in November 2022 during the T20 World Cup semifinal against England. Since then, he has been out of the T20I squad.
However, his recent form in IPL 2025 has caught the attention of the selectors. Reports suggest that he is being considered for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh in August 2025.
Looking Ahead
The Bangladesh tour could be a significant opportunity for Rahul to re-establish himself in the T20I format, especially with the 2026 T20 World Cup on the horizon.
His experience and current form could be valuable assets for the Indian team.
