Over the last few days, there was a major controversy surrounding Dewald Brevis and his replacement journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Notably, Brevis was unsold in the IPL 2025 Mega Auctions and had then come in as a replacement player, mid-season, for the injured Gurjanpreet Singh of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Former Indian spinner and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, recently claimed in a video on his YouTube that Brevis was paid more by Chennai than his replacement fee and that it was illegal.
“Dewald Brevis had a great time in the IPL last year after CSK got him in the back half of the season. I even heard that two-three teams were also talking to him, but they had to let him go after not being able to pay extra money. He had a base price in the auction, but discussions and negotiations would have happened with his agent, that ‘I’ll join the team only for a certain sum of money,” said Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel.
CSK issued a strong statement regarding this
In response to Ashwin’s remarks, Chennai issued a strong statement that every thing was done as per the rule books of replacement players.
“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,” read the statement.
“If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee’s matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract,” the statement added.
Dewald Brevis has been in stupendous form in T20I cricket
In the 2nd T20I between Australia and South Africa, Dewald Brevis smashed a 125* run knock, which is the highest individual score by a South African in T20Is. He helped the Proteas win the game and then played another classy knock in the 3rd T20I.
He smashed 53 runs off just 26 balls and even though his exploits hogged the limelight, it went in vain. Glenn Maxwell played a jaw-dropping knock of 62* runs off just 36 deliveries to seal the deal for the visitors in the 3rd T20I.
