“Heartbreaking”: Rohit Sharma On Mumbai Indians Not Being Able To Retain “Top Players”

Date:

Rohit Sharma reveals that it was tough retention for Mumbai Indians as they had to let go of some of their top gun players into the mega-auction pool for IPL 2022. MI retained only four players including Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Kieron Pollard.

The five-time IPL winners were reckoned as one of the best sides in the cash-rich league. They had absolutely best T20 players on their side with the likes of Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult, Ishan Kishan, etc. However, MI was tipped to follow BCCI’s guidelines ahead of the much-awaited IPL 2022 mega-auction. So, they had the liberty to pick only four players. And, former champions picked Rohit, Bumrah, Pollard, and Suryakumar Yadav.

Rohit Sharma gives his take on MI’s retention policy

Post retention day, for the first time Rohit Sharma has come up with his opinion on MI’s retention policy. In a chat on StarSports, MI skipper said that it was tough retention for Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2022 mega-auction. He added that they had some of the top players of the league. But they couldn’t retain them due to the policy of IPL. He mentioned that it was heartbreaking for the franchise to release the prime and talented players of Mumbai Indians into the auction pool.

“As you all know, it was going to be the toughest retention for Mumbai Indians this year. We have had solid players, absolutely gun players in our squad and to release them is absolutely heart-breaking,” Rohit said on Star Sports during the IPL retention which took place on Tuesday.

As per him, every player released by the franchise has done a great job. And, they will try to get as many players as possible in the upcoming auction of the Indian Premier League.

“They have done some amazing work for this franchise, created a lot of memories. So, to let them go was really tough. Four players including myself – hopefully, we can form a good core and create a solid team around us,” Rohit said.

“The immediate goal is to form a solid team and that will start at the auction. We’ll keep an eye on who we can get in the auction, find the right spot for the right players,” Rohit said.
