The FIFA World Cup 2022 which is presently going on in Qatar has reached its business end. Only one game is left and it is the all-important and high-octane finals between Argentina and France. Now according to a report, the governing body of world football, FIFA has rejected Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s special request for his peace message to appear ahead of the final.
According to a report in CNN, FIFA has rejected the President’s request to share a message ahead of the final that will be taking place at the Lusail Stadium. Notably, Russia has been launching attacks on Ukraine and the two countries have been at loggerheads for 11 months when the war started. Ukraine has been severely affected and several attacks have been unleashed by Russia.
“We thought FIFA wanted to use its platform for the greater good,” CNN said as per a quote of their source.
FIFA has been receiving a lot of flak off-late
FIFA has been at the receiving end for a lot of criticism. Firstly, the hosting of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar has been a major talking point. The condition of migrant labourers and workers have been debated several times and the extreme laws present in the country is in direct hindrance to the liberalism that is being preached across the globe.
FIFA recently at the start of the tournament made sure that footballers cannot wear Pro LGBTQ+ bands on their arms. The body also issued sanctions to a few players who disobeyed their order.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s message was to promote peace and tranquillity. He has previously appeared in videos spreading peace at the Group of 20 Nations Summit, Grammys and the Cannes Film Festival.
The finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022 will witness a clash between two contemporary greats of this game. Lionel Messi of Argentina will fight with Kylian Mbappe of France and they would be hoping that their heroics help their nation lift their 3rd title.
