Sankarlal Chakraborty Becomes First Bengali Coach To Get AFC Pro License Certificate

30th January 2023 was a proud day for all Bengalis and the footballing community of Bengal. Former footballer and coach Sankarlal Chakraborty has gotten the AFC Pro License Certificate, which is the highest certificate given to a coach in India.

With this certificate, Sankarlal Chakraborty can now also coach teams of foreign leagues, apart from the Indian football leagues of I-League and Indian Super League (ISL).

Sankarlal Chakraborty joins an illustrious list of football coaches with the AFC Pro License certificate. The likes of Bino George, Derrick Pereira, Mariano Dias, Khalid Jamil, Savio Medeira, Naushad Moosa, Henry Stanley Rozario and Santosh Kashyap have gotten this certificate in India.

Sankarlal Chakraborty’s playing days

Sankarlal Chakraborty was a very popular and exceptional football player, with a lot of footballing abilities under his belt. He had plied his trade for the two giant football clubs of India- East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan.

He is a graduate of the Tata Football Academy. Chakraborty had broken his leg during a Kolkata Derby in August 1997. Sankarlal had tried to tackle Chima Okorie during the match.

Even though he had tried staging a comeback into professional football, he could not play with the same fluency that he had during his heydays. He retired from professional football in 2003 and last represented the Red and Gold Brigade.

His coaching days

Sankarlal Chakraborty is one of the best coaches from Bengal. He has formerly coached the IFA Academy, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan SC, and Bhawanipore FC.

In December 2022, he joined Sudeva Delhi which plays in the I-League. Delhi is presently struggling in the second-tier league of India and needs to punch above its weight in order to scale up the points table. The team had let go of Japanese coach Atsushi Nakamura before Chakraborty joined forces in the last month of December.
