WPL 2023: 3 Reasons Why WPL Will Be A More Successful League Than Women’s Big Bash League

Date:

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is a landmark moment in the history of women’s cricket. With the WPL 2023 being finally executed, Indian cricket has witnessed a massive change. What used to be just a side 3-match tournament in between the Indian Premier League (IPL) has now transpired into a proper 5-team franchise tournament.

But unlike the IPL, India wasn’t the first country to organise a full-fledged T20 franchise tournament. Australia had started the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in 2014, West Indies had the Women’s Caribbean Premier League in 2022.

England also have The Hundred for women with 8 teams taking part in it.

However, WPL has already left an indelible impression on the entire world. The cash-rich tournament is being played by several world-class players.

In this article, we take a look at 3 reasons why the WPL will be more successful league than the Women’s Big Bash League:

1. Broadcast rights sold at a humongous price

Viacom18 had purchased the broadcast rights of WPL for a whopping Rs. 951 crore amount for a period of 5 years. This is significantly higher than the broadcast rights of the WBBL. Essentially, this underlines the fact that the apex body of Indian cricket, the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) is earning a lot more than the apex body of Australian cricket, Cricket Australia (CA).

With a lot of extra money, BCCI can improve the standards at WPL. This is a major factor in determining which T20 league is better.

2. More crowds at WPL 2023

WPL 2023 has witnessed massive crowds throng the stadiums in Mumbai for the matches. This is a huge boost to the fact that WPL is a better league than WBBL. A huge decision which BCCI took at the inception of the tournament was to make the entry of women, free for the matches of WPL 2023.

This naturally has prompted a lot of women to come and watch the WPL 2023. Hence, there are more crowds in the stadiums.

3. Teams were bought for exorbitant prices

Another factor which proves that WPL is a notch higher than the WBBL is the fact that the teams were bought for mind-boggling tenders. The Adani Group purchased the Gujarat Giants (GG) for a massive amount of Rs. 1289 crore.

The lowest team that was bought during the team auctions was the UP Warriorz team that was bought for Rs. 757 crores. It was bought by the Capri Global Holdings company.
