The Rajasthan Royals (RR) put in a dominant display at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Thursday to secure a 32-run victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2023 match number 37. The home side’s opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was once again the star of the show, as he led his team to a formidable first-innings total. RR then produced a disciplined bowling performance to defend their target and secure an impressive win.
After winning the toss, RR captain Sanju Samson elected to bat first and his decision paid off as Jaiswal got his team off to a flying start. The left-handed opener showcased his ability with the bat by hitting some stunning boundaries, and Jos Buttler also contributed with some fine strokes. The duo’s partnership of 64 runs in the powerplay laid the foundation for a big score.
Jaiswal continued to attack the CSK bowlers and brought up his fifty in just 26 balls, thanks in part to a switch-hit for six. Buttler departed soon after, but Jaiswal continued to impress until he was dismissed by Tushar Deshpande, who also sent back Samson in the same over.
However, RR didn’t let the momentum slip away as Dhruv Jurel played a quickfire cameo and Devdutt Padikkal remained unbeaten on 23 to guide his team to an imposing total of 202/5.
Chasing a challenging target, CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway started cautiously before Gaikwad attacked Jason Holder and hit a four and a six. However, CSK lost Conway soon after, and Gaikwad also departed just as he was approaching his fifty. RR continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals, with R Ashwin dismissing both Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu in the same over.
Shivam Dube provided some hope for CSK with his big hitting, but he lost Moeen Ali to Zampa’s bowling. Dube kept fighting and reached his half-century, but RR’s disciplined bowling restricted CSK to 170/7 in their 20 overs, securing a comfortable 32-run win for the home side.
Overall, it was an impressive performance from RR, with Jaiswal once again showing his class with the bat. CSK will need to regroup quickly and address their batting and bowling issues if they want to compete in the IPL this season.
