In a thrilling encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, New Zealand notched up their second consecutive win at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, defeating the Netherlands by a huge margin of 99 runs.

The match showcased a remarkable performance by Mitchell Santner, who delivered a memorable five-wicket haul.

After being put in to bat on a sluggish track, New Zealand managed to post a formidable total of 322/7 in their allotted overs.

The top-order batsmen made significant contributions, each notching up well-deserved half-centuries. These valuable partnerships laid the foundation for New Zealand’s commanding total.

Devon Conway and Will Young initiated proceedings with a solid 67-run opening partnership, demonstrating patience and skill in their approach. However, Conway’s attempt to clear the boundary ended in his dismissal, as Roelof van der Merwe took a crucial catch to send him back.

Despite the early setback, the Netherlands bowlers, led by Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeran, and van der Merwe, displayed disciplined bowling and managed to keep the Kiwi batsmen in check.

Their combined efforts yielded crucial breakthroughs and prevented New Zealand from running away with the game.

As the Netherlands began their chase of 323 runs, the stress was on Vikramjit Singh and Bas de Leede, who had previously scored half-centuries against Pakistan, to deliver once more.

However, the top order faltered, and it was left to batting all-rounder Colin Ackermann to mount a lone resistance. Ackermann fought valiantly, crafting a gritty 73-ball 69, but found limited support from his teammates.

The star of the show for New Zealand was undoubtedly Mitchell Santner, the left-arm spinner, who delivered a career-defining performance. Santner clinched his maiden five-wicket haul in World Cup cricket, ending with impressive figures of 10-0-59-5.

His exceptional bowling display included crucial dismissals of Max O’Dowd, Ackermann, Scott Edwards, Roelof van der Merwe, and Ryan Klien. Notably, Santner’s five-wicket haul at this venue marked a historic feat, making him the first bowler to achieve such a milestone.

In the end, New Zealand’s all-round excellence, anchored by their top-order batting and Mitchell Santner’s heroics with the ball, proved to be the winning formula.

The Netherlands fought valiantly but were eventually bowled out for 223 in 46.3 overs, securing New Zealand’s 99-run victory.

New Zealand’s journey in the tournament continues with confidence, while the Netherlands, despite the loss, demonstrated their determination to compete at the highest level of cricket.
