Jaffna Kings continued their unparalleled dominance in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) as they lifted their third LPL title in a row. There is absolutely no other team who can match up to the prowess of the Jaffna Kings team as they have completed a hat-trick of winning the LPL.
Jaffna Kings defeated Colombo Stars by 2 wickets in what was a thrilling and riveting final. Batting first, the Colombo Stars team put up 163 on the board for the loss of 5 wickets. It was never going to be a total that was enough as Jaffna Kings is a top-notch side. Dinesh Chandimal and Ravi Bopara scored valuable knocks of 49 and 47* respectively. Chandimal was unfortunate to have missed out on his half-century by 1 run as he was run-out.
There was some disciplined bowling from the Jaffna Kings bowlers and they did not concede a lot of runs in the all-important final. The momentum was set up properly for the Jaffna Kings batters.
Avishka Fernando starred for Jaffna Kings
The opening partnership was a quickfire one as there were some fours and sixes that were coming out from the willows of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Avishka Fernando. But Stars brought about a breakthrough in the 4th over as Gurbaz had to find his way back to the pavilion.
Avishka Fernando notched up a half-century and Sadeera Samarawickrama’s blistering knock of 44 helped Kings reach closer to their target. But Colomo Stars’ bowlers put up a resounding fight as they took the game right down to the wire.
Suranga Lakmal bamboozled the Kings’ batters with his supreme-level bowling. He bagged 3 wickets in the game. Benny Howell too excelled with the ball and picked up 2 wickets. But in the end, the Colombo Stars’ team kept their composure and crossed the winning line.
Avishka Fernando was adjudged as the player of the match for his fabulous half-century.
