Mohammed Shami has addressed the controversy surrounding his on-field celebration, which was misconstrued as a ‘Sajda’ during the World Cup 2023.
The highest wicket-taker for India in the World Cup 2023, denied the baseless rumors and also expressed his pride in being a Muslim and a proud Indian.
Despite not featuring in the playing XI for the initial four games of the World Cup, Shami’s comeback was nothing short of spectacular.
His exceptional bowling prowess, marked by three five-wicket hauls, not only solidified his place in the team but also played a pivotal role in India’s campaign.
Mohammed Shami ‘Sajda’ Celebration Controversy
The controversy erupted after a section of social media users misconstrued Shami’s post-wicket celebration during the Sri Lanka match.
In a widely circulated video, Shami was seen touching the ground after dismissing Kasun Rajitha, prompting speculation about religious undertones.
Shami’s Response To ‘Sajda’ Celebration Controversy:
In an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak, Shami addressed the issue head-on. “If somebody wants to do Sajda, who will stop him? I will not stop anybody from your religion; you will not stop anybody from my religion. If I have to do Sajda, I will do it. What is the problem? I say it with pride that I am Muslim. I am an Indian; I say it with pride that I am an Indian,” Shami affirmed.
Emphasising his allegiance to both his religion and his nation, Shami proudly declared, “If I had an issue, I wouldn’t have lived in India. If I need to take anyone’s permission to do Sajda, why should I live here?”
Shami took the opportunity to clarify that his kneeling after taking a wicket was not a religious act but a result of physical exhaustion from putting his all into his bowling.
Dismissing the controversy as unfounded, Shami expressed disappointment at the misinterpretation of his actions.
While currently undergoing medical treatment, Shami is gearing up for the upcoming Test series in South Africa, set to commence on December 26.
His determination on the pitch and his unabashed pride in his dual identity speak loudly about diversity and unity in the cricket community and beyond.
